Justice Advisors will provide a broad range of advice and technical assistance on criminal justice issues to senior host country officials. The Justice Advisor positions are designed to build a just, open and professional criminal justice infrastructure in post conflict countries, establish sustainable democratic institutions and create stable environments for good governance by extending the rule of law to all citizens in a fair and equitable manner.


Justice Advisor Skill Sets Needed

Judicial practice, prosecution, narcotics prosecution, criminal defense, court administration, police-prosecutor coordination, compliance law, informal justice systems, access to justice and public information, ethics, alternative dispute resolution, basic and advanced legal education, financial crimes and terrorist crimes.


Responsibilities

Level IV Justice Advisors will typically serve as leaders, (Chief of Team) for smaller missions or deputy leaders (Deputy Chief of Team) for larger and/or complex missions. Level IV Justice Advisors function as the senior executive and set overall mission direction working closely with INL. Level IV Justice Advisors will liaise regularly with US Government, senior host government and international leaders.


Requirements

In addition to the minimum requirements, Level IV Justice Advisors must:

  • Be licensed to practice law.
  • Have a minimum 7 years supervisory and management experience.
  • Have a minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in criminal law practice, or:
    • Have a minimum of 5 years criminal trial experience combined with 5 years’ experience implementing international rule of law programs of which 3 years shall have been overseas.
  • Have excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • Possess visionary skills and ability to form strong partnerships in diverse cultures.
  • Previous overseas experience in senior level positions on international rule of law assistance is strongly desired.
